The story was really absorbing and interesting. My favourite character is Cassie, Opal’s sister, because she’s always there for Opal and she encourages her, instead of discouraging her like her mum. Opal Plumstead is arguably Jacqueline Wilson’s most feisty character, although I think Hetty Feather could just about overtake her! Opal is smart and outspoken, sometimes speaking before she thinks. This is terrible at first, but then she meets the factory’s owner, Mrs Roberts, and her son Morgan, and Opal’s life starts to change. It’s the story of a girl whose father gets put in prison and she has to work at a sweet factory. Opal Plumstead is Jacqueline Wilson’s latest novel, and it’s another one set in the past, before World War I. But the First World War is about to begin, and will change Opal’s life for ever.” And when Opal meets Morgan – Mrs Roberts’ handsome son, and the heir to Fairy Glen – she believes she has found her soulmate. But Opal idolises Mrs Roberts, the factory’s beautiful, dignified owner, who introduces Opal to the legendary Mrs Pankhurst and her fellow Suffragettes. Opal struggles to get along with the other workers, who think her snobby and stuck-up. Yet her scholarship and dreams of university are snatched away when her father is sent to prison, and fourteen-year-old Opal must start work at the Fairy Glen sweet factory to support her family. “Opal Plumstead might be plain, but she has always been fiercely intelligent. ![]() Franny and5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Salinger one of America's most beloved writers. "A year ago, six months ago, I thought that I was an artist. Or as he himself puts it in Tropic of Cancer's opening pages: ![]() So, like a bull in a literary china shop, Miller let his writing loose as a kind of cure-all for this state. And art, once the greatest expression of what it means to be human, had become little more than a decoration to conceal and soothe mankind's epic failure. In Miller's worldview the human race had arrived at a point where it was no longer truly living life, but just existing, mistaking its own thoughts and fears for reality. With books like Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, and Black Spring, Miller created a new kind of writing - part autobiography, part philosophical treatise, and part a strangely American brand of street corner storytelling. The obsession with this aspect of Miller's work is unfortunate, however, because it obscures the fact that the sexual liberty he claimed was really part of a larger quest for personal, social, and artistic freedom - a quest which had profound effects that still reverberate through western literature and culture today. This is understandable: Miller did most of his important writing in a period in which this subject was highly taboo in English-language literature, and it was his deliberate challenge to this state of affairs that helped to forge his legend. For the casual reader, it has always been Miller's frank and graphic descriptions of sex that have fuelled this controversy. ![]() The secret cipher of the ufonauts5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() The Book of the Law - or Liber AL vel Legis - is the central holy text of Thelema, a spiritual and social philosophy derived from Western esotericism and founded by magician Aleister Crowley. ![]() Other software exists but for this initial phase of the project The Lodge has decided to use ENIGMagick to get the Lexicon up and running. To summarize, it is a book that explores and explains the underpinnings of quantum mechanics.
